How is Polysorbate 80 made?

Polysorbate 80 is carefully and controlledly produced to obtain a high-quality final product that meets the specific requirements of various industries. The production process starts with sorbitan monooleate, an ester based on naturally occurring substances obtained from vegetable oils.

To obtain Polysorbate 80, sorbitan monooleate undergoes a reaction called ethoxylation. In this process, ethylene oxide is added to sorbitan monooleate, leading to the formation of a complex chemical compound: Polysorbate 80. During this process, the ethylene oxide molecules are linked to sorbitan monooleate, resulting in an ethoxylation chain.

The function ESMO

ESMO, also known as Polysorbate 80, is renowned for its excellent emulsifying properties. It has the ability to mix oil and water, making it a valuable component in various products. As a non-ionic surfactant, ESMO enhances the stability and spreadability of emulsions. This makes it particularly suitable for use in cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, and food applications.

ESMO is also appreciated for its solubilizing capacity, allowing it to dissolve and blend ingredients that would otherwise not mix. This property proves useful in the production of medications and other industrial applications that require combining different components.

Polysorbate 80 in various industries

Polysorbate 80, also known as ESMO, has applications in various industries.

In the cosmetics industry, Polysorbate 80 is widely used in various products such as creams, lotions, and shampoos. It acts as an emulsifier that helps blend oils and aqueous components, resulting in a stable and uniform texture. Additionally, it can enhance the absorption of active ingredients, making it a valuable addition to many skincare products.

In the pharmaceutical sector, Polysorbate 80 plays an essential role as an excipient in medications. It has the property of improving the solubility of drugs, thereby enhancing their effectiveness. Moreover, it contributes to the stability and spreadability of medications, which is crucial in the production of injectable solutions and infusions.

The food industry also utilizes the properties of Polysorbate 80. It acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer, helping create smooth textures in food products such as dressings, ice cream, and sauces.
